Eugene Richards’ neues Buch handelt von verlassenen und vergessenen Farmen und Häusern in amerikanischen
Staaten wie Nebraska, Kansas oder New Mexico. Die Gestaltung dieses groß- und querformatigen
Buches ist so simpel wie konsequent: Die linke Seite bleibt frei und bildet den notwendigen Weißraum,
die rechte Seite enthält ein querformatiges Bild aus der Kleinbildkamera dieses unvergleichlichen
Dokumentarfotografen, das die Leere der Orte und die Spuren ihrer ehemaligen Bewohner zeigt. „Blue
Room“ ist ein bewegendes Buch und das erste Projekt von Richards in Farbe. Auf symbolische und distanzierte
Weise berichtet es über Erinnerung und Verlust, über ökonomische und persönliche Tragödien,
ohne diese zu konkretisieren. Eine derartige Unmittelbarkeit und Intensität kann der heutige Fotojournalismus
wohl nur noch im Fotobuch erreichen, nicht mehr als Veröffentlichung in einer Zeitschrift.
Eugene Richards’ new book deals with deserted and forgotten farms and houses located in
American states such as Nebraska, Kansas or New Mexico. The Design of this large landscape-format
book is as simple as it is consistent: the left side remains empty, thus creating the necessary white space;
the right side contains a landscape-format image depicting the emptiness of places and human traces,
taken with a 35 mm camera by a unique documentary Photographer who has inspired a whole generation.
“Blue Room” is a moving book which uses Color for the first time. It portrays memories and loss,
economic and personal tragedies, in a symbolic and distanced way yet without the need to substantiate
them. It would seem that these days photojournalism can produce a directness and intensity of this caliber
only as a photobook-essay, rather than being published through a magazine.
