In letzter Zeit sind gleich mehrere Bücher als rückblickende Monographien entstanden, wie z. B. die Bücher von Anna Fox oder Sophie Calle. Aber keines übertraf dabei ”In History“ von Susan Meiselas. Susan könnte als ”postmoderne“ Reportagefotografin bezeichnet werden, denn sie ist immer auf der Suche nach einer Geschichte und den darin enthaltenen komplexen ethischen Fragestellungen, die sie dann auch als solche präsentiert. Dieses Buch liefert uns ”Hintergrund-Geschichten“ mit vielen Details, voller Intelligenz und Leidenschaft, ebenso wie es großartige Fotografien zeigt und ganz hervorragend gearbeitet ist.

Recently, several books have dealt with the problem of the retrospective monograph, those by Anna Fox and Sophie Calle for instance, but none better than Susan Meiselas’s “In History”. Susan might be termed a ‘postmodern’ reportage photographer, in that she always builds in the question of getting the story and the complex ethical issues involved, even as she presents them, and this book gives us the ‘back stories’ in exhaustive detail and with intelligence and passion — as well as exhibiting great photographs and excellent book craft.
